local non-profit affiliated with Keep American Beautiful, is sponsoring
an 18 and over Earth Day Asheville 2008 music showcase and local
designer's fashion show featuring recycled materials on April 22nd at
the Orange Peel in downtown Asheville. The event will raise funds
for earth-friendly projects by Quality Forward including the launch of
Asheville Litter Free (ALF), a community-wide anti-litter campaign.The musical entertainment provided will be determined by community on-line voting in 6 different genre categories. Beginning March 9th until April 8th, you'll be able to access the website www.earthdayasheville.org where you'll be instructed on how to vote for your favorite music act. The genres represented are Jazz/Blues/R&B; Bluegrass/Oldtime; Americana/Country/Acoustic; Latin/World/Reggae; Rock/Funk/Dance; and Electronic.
How to Vote: Here's what will happen when you go visit the site:
A list of bands in each genre will be linked there and with a click of your mouse, you'll be sent to the website/myspace of the bands behind them. You'll be able to hear sound clips and review the gig calendars of each contestant. After listening, the user friendly voting procedure instructions will guide you to register to vote. You can only vote once, so make sure you've got your picks in each category before you vote. After registering, you will receive an email guiding you on how to place your vote.

POPAsheville began as IdFest in 2003 with a one-night, 5-band, multimedia show meant to repay some bands who had helped Asheville band Stephanie's Id with shows on the road. The fest remained a one-night affair for a few years until April 2007, when it erupted into a 2-day, 2-venue event, showcasing 28 bands/acts over 2 nights in 2 venues on 3 stages. The fest also included a music biz panel discussion for musician attendees, a viewing of a recording session at Asheville's legendary Collapseable Studio, and a tour of the new award-winning state-of-the art Echo Mountain Studio.
The fest became too big for one band to manage. It was renamed POPAsheville, and more people got involved. Over MLK weekend in January 2008, POPAsheville (formerly IdFest) celebrates its second year as a venue-based music festival celebrating the uniqueness, artistry, and authenticity of Asheville’s modern music scene!
In addition to 2 days of fantastic local and non-local acts on multiple stages, this year’s fest will feature a shuttle between venues (the Grey Eagle and the new Rocket Club are currently on board); more surprises are in the works.
The POPAsheville mission:
*To celebrate the uniqueness, artistry, and authenticity of Asheville’s modern music scene
*To provide an atmosphere where musical artists make connections to help with the business of their music
*To bolster the Asheville music scene by drawing attendees from both within and outside Asheville who want to hear new and interesting music.
Sponsors (both monetary and in-kind) are currently being sought. Sponsorship opportunities include stage sponsorship, printed schedule ad placement, poster logo, band hospitality, or other creative possibility.

Valorie Miller is a powerful songwriter who creates musical paintings of a dark beauty and intense depth. A self-taught musician and naturally gifted lyricist,
Valorie has developed a unique finger-picking style on the guitar and delivers a strong and melodic upright bass performance. Having spent two years as an
accompanist (on bass and vocals) and opening act for the nationally touring singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe, she has shared the stage with the likes of Merle Haggard,
Wilco, Leon Russell and Grammy award winner Shelby Lynne. With a voice describe as "pure Carolina, from whisper to wail", she is a musical firecracker, and a

The first two concerts, held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, raised over $3000 for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance reaching Iraq, Darfur,
and tsunami-damaged areas, and featured Hipbones, Big Block Dodge, Subliminal Trio and Cabo Verde. Proceeds from Instruments of Peace #3 will benefit
North Carolina Peace Action in Raleigh.
Big Block Dodge will open the show with their patented brand of southern fusion called "groosion." Bill Altman is a certified powerhouse on guitar, and
Jeff Hinkle throws down a bottom end like few others around here. BBD has opened around the southeast for Derek Trucks, Garaj Mahal, John Cowan,
Topaz, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Yellowjackets, and Merle Saunders, and its CD Manifold Destiny earned a solid review in the Dean Budnick book, Jambands.
Ruby Slippers has become a WNCW favorite and secured a loyal fan base in support of their debut CD Living Room. Molly Kummerle is a soulful, sultry vocalist,
and a poignant and provocative songwriter. Andy John is amazing to watch as he covers traditional guitar and bass parts simultaneously. The Indie recently wrote,
"Craft and commerce don’t usually mix, but then...come check out Molly, Andy, and Robin. They will redefine your musical paradigms."
Klarcnova began in Memphis in 1998 with guitarist Andy John and bassist Shayne Heather. Featuring Stax-influenced grooves, Hendrix-ish chord progressions
and Zappa-esque musical wit, Klarcnova is one of the most popular modern jazz trios in Asheville, heard at Grey Area, Zambra, and Barley’s, as well as Johnson City,
Charlotte and Charleston. Charleston City Paper described Klarcnova’s music as "in the vein of guitarist John Scofield’s most aggressive stuff."
Big Block Dodge, Ruby Slippers and Klarcnova offer different styles and groove to IOP, while sharing one thing in common – the drumming skills of the event’s
organizer, Robin Tolleson
Green Light, recently chosen to be part of the "Homegrown Network" of bands, has toured as far as New York and New Orleans, but this will be their first club
date in Asheville. The group includes Kevin Gill on guitar, Dustin Hofsess on bass, and Adam Snow on drums. Their latest CD, My Experiments With Groove, has
been featured on WNCW-FM. Homegrown calls GL "foreboding but funky," and Live Music Archive calls them "a modern day Band of Gypsies."
